Novelty

Novelty in therapy for illness stress

One of therapy’s more useful characteristics is creating a space and opportunity for novelty. The experience of novelty in therapy can be very helpful in many ways. Novelty can assist in developing new perspectives for utilization in investigations of feelings of “stuckness”, helplessness, and the fear and anxiety that can often be encased in them. Sometimes, the very novelty of possible identification of the concern underlying the one initially brought to therapy can be enough to help one feel less stuck and/or helpless. An opportunity for someone to ask a question you hadn’t considered asking or, that we might not have wanted to ask due to fear of the subject matter of the question and/or the consequences of considering the answer. Therapy can provide a professional guide to walk alongside the client as we explore these darker spaces together, and in so doing, possibly find or create new tools that allow us to more comfortably manage or live with our concerns and circumstances.
